I have cedar shingles that have seen better days after 40 years, especially on the front and sides of my house, while the rear still looks decent. My plan is to only replace the front and sides with vinyl siding in a similar color, specifically cedar impressions. Is this a bad idea? Also, I'm concerned about how to address the corner boards, as one side will have shingles and the other will be vinyl. I'm aware of rabbeted corners, but I'm likely stuck with non-rabbeted corners and j-trim, which I'm not thrilled about. Additionally, how should I handle overlapping the house wrap if the rear side still has siding?

There are definitely more appealing options than vinyl! In my opinion, vinyl can look a bit tacky. Have you considered Hardie board, bamboo, or even more cedar? As for the house wrap, you might not need to overlap it if you properly seal the corners. You could also replace the corners with vertical runs of wood or Hardie, and just trim the existing cedar to butt into it.
It's totally doable, but just keep in mind that one side of your house will always look different from the others. Even if you use the same brand and color, the fade from sun exposure or differences in batches over time mean they may not match perfectly.
