Is it a bad idea to trim an old glass door by over 4 inches?

I found this amazing old wooden door with a window at a school office online that's caught my eye, but there's a catch—it's about 4.5 inches too wide for my doorframe. I'm wondering if it would be crazy to buy it and have my carpenter friend trim it down by that much. I don't mind if it doesn't look perfect, but will it end up looking weird or be impossible to do?

It really depends on how the door is built. You're looking at trimming about 2 inches from each side, which might be too much depending on its structure. A good idea would be to send those photos to your carpenter friend for their professional advice on whether it can be done without ruining it.

Yeah, they might have some insights on it! It might end up looking off if it’s not done right.

I’d say it’s a gamble. If you trim it too much, it could start looking ugly even if it's structurally fine. You should definitely check its construction before making any cuts.

You can definitely try it! However, without knowing how the door is constructed or its overall condition, it’s hard to determine what modifications are feasible.

That’s true! If you can, I'd suggest sharing pictures with your carpenter friend to get their take before making a decision.
