Is It a Concern When a Roofing Contractor Lowers Their Quote Significantly?

I'm in the process of getting a new roof and I've received two quotes. The scopes of work are practically identical, and one contractor initially quoted me about $27k while the second came in at around $20k. After I pointed out the lower bid, the second contractor dropped his price to $22.5k. I'm curious if the fact that he was able to reduce his quote by nearly $5k is a red flag. His initial quote was already the middle price before the adjustment. What should I make of this?

It's not uncommon for contractors to have some wiggle room in their bids, especially in the roofing industry where profit margins can be high. It sounds like the contractor might have aimed high initially, hoping you'd accept the first offer, but when faced with competition, he readjusted. Personally, I'd check out the reviews of the $20k company. If they have solid feedback, it might be a sign that they're offering a fair deal without attempting to overcharge you.

The $20k company has a 4.6 rating and good mentions on Nextdoor. The one that lowered their price has a perfect 5.0 ratings everywhere, so it's tough!
