I'm really interested in growing mint, but I've heard how invasive it can be. I'm considering burying a 31-gallon galvanized trash barrel, filled halfway with gravel for drainage and the rest with soil. I've read that using fully enclosed planters might not drain properly, but I also worry that containers with holes would let the roots spread out too freely. What do you all think about this plan?

I personally wouldn't bury anything for mint since it tends to root above ground too easily, even sideways. I grew mine in a planter on a brick patio, and it thrived! No issues at all.
Burying that 31-gallon barrel sounds like a solid plan to me! Just remember to drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. Mint doesn't like having its roots sitting in water.
