Is it a good idea to grab dirt from my sidewalk for gardening instead of buying it?

I'm a beginner gardener and trying to save some money. I was thinking about just scooping up dirt from my sidewalk instead of buying soil from Home Depot or any store. It seems like dirt is just dirt, right? Last time I used sidewalk dirt, my plants seemed to do okay, though I admit I didn't water them enough. I'm looking for advice on whether this is a good idea and tips to keep my plants alive for at least a month!

It's totally possible to use sidewalk dirt for plants, but you've got to be careful. While it's okay to take some dirt from public spaces, be mindful about what you grow in it—contaminated dirt can lead to unsafe plants. When I started gardening, I used park dirt for some weeds, and they grew fine! Just keep experimenting and see what works for you, but I suggest steering clear of eating anything you grow from it.

Have you thought about composting? You can collect fallen leaves from neighbors or leftover coffee grounds from cafes for free! Composting is a great way to create rich soil without spending money. It’s a fun project and will definitely help improve the quality of the dirt you find!

This sounds like a great idea! I might give it a shot!

I’d be cautious about using sidewalk dirt. Real soil is crucial for plant growth because it contains nutrients and has the right pH levels. Sidewalk dirt might not provide what your plants need. You could end up with plants that don’t do well, so I'd recommend getting a small bag of potting mix—it’s portable and will pay off in healthier plants!

Thanks, I’ll consider that!
