I'm planning to create a hidden bookcase door for an 8-foot opening using 3/4" plywood. The thought of constructing a full 8-foot bookcase feels pretty intimidating, especially when it comes to keeping it square. Would it be a good idea to build two 48" bookcases and stack them instead? Is this a common approach among builders? I also intend to add 1/8" plywood on the sides to hide any imperfections.

Building two separate 48" bookcases and stacking them is definitely a viable option! I've done it myself. If you have the right tools, I'd suggest dadoing in the shelves and using blind rabbet joints for the top and bottom. This method can help keep everything square and eliminate the need for that extra veneer on the sides. If you want adjustable shelves, consider adding a fixed one right in the middle for extra stability.
I've built some really tall bookshelves for my home office, and my biggest challenge was moving them around. Those 7 and 8-foot shelves can be super awkward! Just keep in mind that construction and movement of such large pieces can be tricky, and having a buddy to help is always a good idea.
Moving it is definitely another challenge! I guess working on something that big is intimidating for sure.

That sounds like a great idea! I don’t have a table saw either to make those cuts, though.
