Is It Better to Buy or Rent Tools for a Few Jobs?

I'm starting to take on more projects and need tools like an orbital sander and an electric planer. I'm wondering if it's better to hire these tools for a few jobs or if I should invest in mid-range ones instead. I'd love to hear your experiences with renting vs. buying tools, especially in the UK!

For tools like an orbital sander, purchasing might be a smarter choice. Mid-range options won't break the bank and can save you money if you compare rental costs. As for the planer, are you talking about a jointer planer, thicknesser, or just a handheld electric one? Also, you might be able to rent shop time at a local place, which could be really useful. In the long run, buying the tool is often better if you plan to use it more than once. If it’s just a one-off, then renting makes sense!

Wait, you can rent time at Rockler?! That's awesome! I didn't know that.
