Is It Better to Slice the Edge of a Board Before Using a Jointer?

I'm wondering if it makes more sense to cut a slice off the edge of my board before running it through the jointer. My thinking is that this could save me a lot of passes to flatten it if I can get it somewhat close first. What do you all think?

I’d say it really depends. Typically, you shouldn’t need too many passes unless the board is in pretty bad shape. If that's the case, maybe reconsider the board you picked. If it’s seriously warped, using a track saw to cut a straight edge could be a better idea, but that might negate the need for the jointer altogether.

Just theorizing, no specific board in mind. Thanks for the input!
