Is it common to be allergic to only certain types of the same fruit or veggie?

I've noticed something strange and wanted to know if anyone else experiences this: I can eat iceberg and romaine lettuce without any issues, but I've developed an allergy to the little gem lettuce I just harvested from my own garden. Has anyone else had a similar experience with different types of the same fruit or vegetable?

It might be related to oral allergy syndrome. Some people react to specific types of fruits and veggies because of cross-reactivity. It's worth checking it out!

That's really interesting! I used to be allergic to strawberries as a kid, but after eating a lot of them, I actually grew out of it. It seems like allergies can be kind of wild like that!

I have similar problems with tomatoes and avocados, which are linked to latex allergies. My allergist mentioned that the riper they are, the less latex they contain. So for veggies like tomatoes, I try to eat them overripe to avoid reactions. Maybe there's a ripeness factor at play with your lettuce too?

That's a good point! I've had reactions to prewashed lettuce from the store, is it typically overripe?
