I've been dealing with noisy ceiling fans in my home, and after much frustration, I called in some electricians from the store where I bought the fans. They ended up putting small metal weights on the blades to balance them. But here's the issue: one of the weights flew off while the fan was on, hit the wall, and could have seriously injured someone! This has happened more than once, which makes me question if adding weights like this is a typical practice for balancing ceiling fans. Also, I've had these electricians come out three times already, and once they even cracked a part of my fan. So, is this weight thing standard, or did I just get a couple of bad technicians?

Using weights to balance ceiling fans is not unusual, but they should be designed to attach securely, like with clips. Metal weights can be risky without the right adhesive. If the fan is noisy, it might actually be a motor issue or something else entirely, not just a balance problem.
Some fans used to come with small adhesive weights for balancing, and they usually work fine. Just make sure they’re properly adhered; if they’re flying off, that's a safety hazard. You might want to check if the installation is done right too.
It’s not uncommon to use weights for balancing fans, but they should be firmly attached. If they're flying off, it might be a sign that either the weights are poorly designed, or the installation wasn't done correctly. Also, blades need to be in the right order for the best balance.
