Is It Crazy to Break Down a Basement Wall for a Storage Room?

After moving from NYC to a new house and realizing we're short on storage space, I'm contemplating breaking down a foundation wall in our basement to create a small storage closet – maybe around 4x4 with a standard door. I can't help but wonder if this is a feasible DIY project or if I should just address the issues in our garage. Anyone have insights or experiences with this?

It’s crucial to consider whether you really need to break through the foundation. Framing a new room is a different task entirely. Mold in the garage shouldn’t be ignored either—it’s essential to fix that first. Honestly, going through the foundation for a small closet seems overkill. You'd be better off renting a storage unit or cleaning the garage instead.

Yeah, the garage is in bad shape, but remediating it could be a smart move. Definitely worth considering!

I wouldn’t recommend breaking through the basement wall. It could turn your home into a money pit and even make it unsafe. Consider adding a small room or storage elsewhere instead. It’ll save you a lot of headaches down the road. Plus, addressing your garage moisture first seems more logical and cost-effective!
