I just realized after buying my house that the gas stove has a recirculating microwave vent instead of a proper outdoor vent. I'm wondering how big of a deal this is. Should I get a professional to install an overhead outdoor vent, or would it be better to switch to an electric stove?

As an engineer focusing on building retrofits, I can't stress enough how important it is to have proper ventilation for a gas range. Burning natural gas releases carbon monoxide and other harmful pollutants that can lead to serious health issues like respiratory problems, headaches, and even more severe consequences over time. I highly recommend you consider installing an outdoor vent, especially if there are kids in your home. Don't underestimate the importance of air quality in your kitchen!

Totally agree! Carbon monoxide is no joke. It’s best to crack a window or get that outdoor vent as soon as possible to protect your family.
