Is It Fair to Withhold Payment for Poor Landscaping Work?

I recently hired a landscaper to put turf in my backyard around the pool, but I'm not happy with how it turned out. Despite putting in a lot of effort, the seams look terrible. After he tried to fix it and only made it worse, I got a quote from another landscaper that matches what I owe the original guy. I offered the original landscaper a chance to redo the turf, but even after he did a bit of work, it still doesn't look right. Now, he's sent me the final invoice and added extra charges that we didn't agree on, totaling an additional $600. What should I do? How much can I really hold back without it being unfair?

You definitely shouldn't have to pay until you get what you were promised. If the work isn't up to your expectations and there were extra charges added that weren't discussed beforehand, hold back on the payment. Try to communicate clearly about the issues and see if you can negotiate. It's reasonable to pay for the work that was done as long as it meets what you agreed upon.

I get that it’s frustrating, but remember that once the grass grows, you might not notice the seams as much. Give it some time, like a week or two, and see how it settles. But still, if the job wasn’t done right and you’re being hit with unexpected charges, you’re in your rights to withhold part of the payment. Maybe try to pay what you think is fair based on the work done, but don’t just ignore the invoice.
