Is it Legal and Practical to Run Solar PV Cables Overhead Between Telegraph Poles in the UK?
Asked by ElectricEagle92
I'm looking for advice on running a 100m stretch of 8x10mm PV cable from my ground-mounted solar setup to my barn. Most of it will be buried, but there's a tricky segment where trenching equipment just can't reach. My plan is to install some telegraph poles, run the cables overhead for about 12m between poles, then drop down into trenched ducting or use cable trays along my stables before connecting them in the barn. Has anyone else tried this? I'm not concerned about overhead power lines or tall vehicles, but I want to know what UK regulations might apply to this setup. Also, what type of cables are best for that overhead span? Thanks in advance for any tips!

Have you thought about using a mole for the parts that need to go underground? It’s a great way to avoid all the digging and potential disruptions.

If you're crossing over any roads, even private ones, you should definitely consider the minimum height regulations. Authorities will always err on the side of caution regarding height clearance for emergency vehicles. It's just good sense to provide safety for potential traffic that may come through later.

That’s a solid question! Since you’re spanning 12m, think about what's beneath the cables - a road, footpath, or just open land? For safety and legal compliance, consulting an electrician is definitely smart. I found a couple of great resources regarding overhead lines, which might help you out: 1. [Site guide from IET](https://engx.theiet.org/f/wiring-and-regulations/29411/support-of-overhead-lines)
2. Their electrical guidelines on PV cabling: [IET PV guidance](https://electrical.theiet.org/wiring-matters/years/2025/104-march-2025/exploring-wiring-systems-for-unearthed-dc-solar-pv-systems/) Make sure your setup is at least 3-3.5m high and avoid using metal conduit for overhead runs if possible. Flexible PVC might be a better choice.
PV_Pro23: Thanks for those links! They’ve been super helpful. It looks like if I stick with the height regulations and use a catenary system, I'll be alright. I just wish I could find 10mm DC SWA cable, but it seems like I might have to find alternatives since it won’t keep my voltage drop below 3%.
SkyHighTech: Glad they helped! Have you checked the Gripple catenary cable system? It's made for solar setups, though it can be pricey.

You can use catenary wire to keep the cables from sagging between the poles, and it should work well. I’d recommend using metal pipes, like scaffolding, instead of wood for support. Not sure about specific regulations, but it might be good to check out some relevant electrician resources online.

CableGuru88: Exactly! Even if it seems unlikely now, keeping things safe should always be the priority. Better safe than sorry!
