I'm setting up an EG4 Flex21/GridBoss system with two G4 14 kW batteries and my installer recommended that I keep my old manual 200 amp transfer switch, even though the GridBoss has a built-in 200 amp transfer switch. I'm not sure if there's a point in having both. The installer argues that if the GridBoss fails, the manual switch would allow me to connect a generator and bypass it. He claims this is standard practice. However, spending an extra $800 on a transfer switch seems unnecessary to me. What do you all think?

Your installer is probably just playing it safe. But honestly, the whole point of the GridBoss is to simplify the system and reduce extra hardware. I'd say skip the manual switch and save your money for something else.
I think it's a bit redundant, especially since the GridBoss has the transfer switch built-in. If something goes wrong with the GridBoss, you could still manually flip breakers instead of spending extra on a switch you might not need.
True, but if you're worried about appearances, that old switch is taking up space in a not-so-great spot, and you could get some cash by selling it.

I agree! Plus, if you're ever in a jam, you still have the option to do a manual bypass inside the GridBoss.
