Is it normal for a zinnia bloom to look different from the packet?

My first zinnia has bloomed, but its shape and size don’t quite match the seed packet picture. It seems healthy otherwise. Can the first flower be different, and is there anything I should change for the next blooms?

One bloom isn’t always a good preview of the whole plant. It may still open further, and early flowers can be smaller than later ones on some zinnias. Give it a little time and see how the next bloom compares.

That’s helpful. I’ll wait to judge it by more than the first flower.

Seed packet pictures show an example, not a promise that every flower will be identical. Shape and size vary by variety, and plants from the same packet can differ too. If the packet lists a bloom size, use that as a rough expectation rather than a guarantee.

If it’s growing indoors, light could be part of the picture. A grow light can help, but indoor conditions may still produce less vigorous growth than bright outdoor sun, which can affect flowering. For future blooms, remove spent flowers above a leaf joint to encourage branching. Pinching is usually done earlier, before the plant flowers, so it won’t change the bloom that’s already open.
