Hey everyone! I need some advice on a situation we're facing with a local landscaping design-build company. We hired them to create a comprehensive plan for our small backyard, and while we absolutely love the design they presented, we were shocked by the pricing. Instead of a precise quote, we received a range from $300k to $540k. When we inquired about the $240k difference, they were vague and mentioned 'unknowns' without giving us a breakdown of costs. They operate on a 'package deal' basis and don't offer individual component pricing, which has us feeling uneasy. We're torn because we love the design but feel uncomfortable committing to such a huge financial discrepancy and the lack of transparency. Are wide price ranges like this normal for complex landscaping projects? Are our expectations for a detailed breakdown unreasonable? What should we do moving forward? Thanks for any insights!

From what you've described, it sounds like they're just trying to cover their behinds. If they can handle that sort of work, they should absolutely be able to give you at least a rough breakdown of major costs. It might be time to look for other options because you definitely want a contractor who can communicate clearly about their estimates.
I think it would be wise to get several quotes. A large range like that is concerning, and other firms might give you a better understanding of what’s reasonable for your project. If you have the design, don’t hesitate to take it to other builders for a second opinion!
Good call! Shopping around will help you get a clearer picture and might save you a lot in the long run. Not to mention, some contractors might even appreciate working off a design you already paid for.
That pricing practice seems sketchy to me. I've encountered contractors who are open about their pricing and projects ran much smoother. If I were you, I’d consider finding another contractor. With that kind of price range, it honestly feels like they might be planning to charge you at the higher end of that estimate, which is astounding. You could potentially buy a small house with that amount!
Exactly! If they can't give you a clear breakdown, it's a red flag. Do some research and look for other contractors who offer detailed quotes. You deserve transparent pricing!

Totally agree! It's critical to know where your money is going, especially on a big project. If they really want your business, they should be more forthcoming.
