Is it Normal for French Door Refrigerators to Freeze on the Top Shelf?

I recently got a Whirlpool WRF767SDHZ05 French door refrigerator, but I'm running into a freezing issue. I had an earlier model swapped out for this one because it was doing the same thing. The temp is set to 37°F, but the top shelf keeps dropping below 30°F and freezing liquids. I placed jugs, cups, and bowls of water inside to mimic a full fridge, as I heard that empty fridges can have trouble regulating temperatures. However, even with this setup, the water on the top shelf is freezing. Is this a common issue with these models? It seems harmful for food to freeze and thaw constantly. Should I consider a different model? I need to decide on a return or exchange today. Any advice would be appreciated!

You’re definitely not alone! I have a 15-year-old KitchenAid, and it sometimes drops to 30°F too. It has a quirky 'Max Cool' button that turns on by itself, which might be part of the problem. I suspect there could be a glitch in the thermostat. We keep ours set to 43°F to maintain that recommended 40°F average, but yeah, it can get a bit odd at times.

I had an old Frigidaire French door for about 10 years without any freezing issues. When I switched to an LG model a few years back, it worked well too. I set both to 35°F, and had no problems. Your setup sounds like it has enough items to help regulate the temp, so it’s puzzling why it’s freezing like that!

Honestly, some modern fridges aren't built well anymore. I bought a GE fridge three years ago, and it was a disaster—it had to be replaced because the temperatures would bounce from -30°F to 75°F during defrost cycles. It might be worth exploring other models if this one is acting up significantly.
