Is It Normal for Mugwort to Die Back in Winter and Regrow in Spring?

I've noticed that my mugwort dries out completely every winter and then comes back from the roots in spring. This has happened for the second year in a row. Is this normal behavior for mugwort, or is something going wrong with my plant?

Yes, that's completely normal! Many perennial plants, including mugwort, lose their leaves and stems in winter and store energy in their roots. They'll sprout back to life in the spring when conditions improve. So, it sounds like your mugwort is doing just fine!

Just to add to that, this behavior actually happens in the wild, too! Don't worry too much about your plant being stressed; it's just following its natural cycle. As long as the roots are healthy, your mugwort should come back strong.
