I recently discovered a large hole in my crawlspace where the main water line enters my home, which was built in the 1950s. I'm currently doing extensive renovations, including installing a new vapor barrier, sump pump, and dehumidifier. As I was cutting out some old galvanized steel pipes from a previous heating system, I came across this pit. I'm wondering if it's typical for it to be like this and whether I should fill it with gravel or something else before putting down the vapor barrier.

Yeah, that hole is pretty common, especially in older homes. It looks like your water line might have been updated since it was originally installed. Filling it in with gravel or soil should be fine if it makes you feel better about it. Just make sure not to obstruct anything important!
Hey! It's not unusual to find a hole like that where the water line comes in. Sometimes older homes have these pits created during the installation. If it’s bothering you, you can definitely fill it with dirt or gravel, but it’s not strictly necessary. Just ensure everything is connected properly, especially since you're doing all this new work in the crawlspace.
