Is It Okay to Plant a Sprouted Potato?

Hey everyone! I've been busy setting up my garden with various fruits and veggies, and I'm keen on growing some potatoes too. Unfortunately, I tried to order seed potatoes, but they can't be delivered to my area. I was wondering if I could just use a sprouted potato from the grocery store instead? They're local potatoes, not the kind you'd find at big supermarkets. I've seen mixed information online about this. Can anyone help me figure it out? Thanks a lot!

I tried this last summer and used all the potatoes that sprouted eyes. I didn't harvest a ton, but it was definitely worth it. I just buried them in some fabric grow bags next to my veggie beds. They did okay alongside my seed garlic too! If they’re going to go to waste anyway, give it a shot!

Absolutely, if your potato has shoots coming out of the eyes, that's called chitting! Just let it sit in the sun for a few days until those shoots darken, then plant it about 4-6 inches deep. Keep it well-watered and you'll be good to go! I did this recently and now I've got some nice greens popping up from my potatoes!

Thank you!

Yes, potatoes with sprouted eyes are ready to be planted. People here often cut about an inch slice from each sprout before planting them. It works quite well, just make sure you have some good soil and sunlight for them!

So any potato with eyes should work?
