Is it okay to plant in soil with some weeds present?

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the weeds in my garden and I'm unsure if I should plant into the soil even though I've cleaned up some of them. There are still a few weeds left, and I worry they might affect my plants. Should I go ahead and plant?

It really depends on how many weeds and their size. If there are just a few small ones here and there, you should be fine. You mentioned you dug up some 6-inch strands, so it sounds like you've done a good job getting rid of the major roots. Just keep an eye on it as you grow!

Yeah, I think I managed to pull most of the roots out, so I'll see how it goes.

When in doubt, just plant! If it doesn’t work out, you’ll know how to manage it better next time. You've got seeds ready, so give it a shot!

Definitely! I have plenty of seeds to try out.

Once you plant your seeds or starts, make sure to mulch around them heavily. This will really help keep the weeds down for next season. You can use anything like straw, wood chips, or even shredded cardboard—whatever you have handy!

I had a similar issue! I decided to put down some cardboard over the soil and topped it with a mix of topsoil, composted manure, and peat moss. I went about 4-6 inches deep for good veggies like tomatoes. For those plants, I dig down deep to ensure a good foundation without any weeds. It's my version of no-till gardening, which helps with heavy clay and keeps moisture in during the summer.
