I got a white/pink Phlox subulata from a friend, but it's in this ugly planter that's too heavy for me to move. My elderly mom is visiting, and she struggles to get around it. I originally planned to divide the phlox and plant it in my flower beds this autumn. However, the flowers are pretty dead, although the leaves are still alive but not looking great. Can I dig it out of the pot now, divide it, and plant it? Will it survive, or should I consider something else?

If you’re looking to get it in the ground, I’d take the chance! Plants like phlox usually thrive better in soil rather than pots. Your odds are good that it will survive the move.
I say go for it! Just deadhead any dry or brown parts before replanting. Sometimes plants might die back a bit but then bounce back with fresh growth. I’ve had success with all sorts of plants by digging them up and trying new spots in my yard. Plants are pretty resilient!
Spring or early summer is typically the best time to divide perennials, but it sounds like you might not have that luxury right now. If you do go for it, just make sure to amend the soil and keep it well-watered as it adjusts. Also, don’t forget to trim away any dead parts!
Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to do that.
