Is It Okay to Start Watermelon Seeds Indoors 4 Weeks Before the Last Frost?

I have some watermelon seeds from last year, and I'm aware they might not germinate as well. I'm considering starting them indoors about four weeks before my last frost date. Is this a good idea, or will the lower germination rate be a problem?

Absolutely, that’s what I’m doing too! My watermelon plants often don’t have enough time to ripen before the growing season wraps up, so I’m using biodegradable pots this year to make the transplant easier without disturbing the roots. Just keep an eye on them as they get bigger!

That's clever! I'm also trying soil blocks for my watermelons this year. I live in Chicagoland, so I'm facing the same short season issue. Last year, I tried the Blacktail Mountain variety and they were great. Just a few made it because my compost wasn’t great, but I'm giving it another shot!
