Is it okay to use spackling paste on an exposed pipe?

I have this exposed pipe where there's a gap between it and the concrete, and it's collecting a lot of dust. I'm thinking of just covering it with spackling paste since I don't mind if it doesn't look perfectly straight. But I'm concerned about whether this might cause any issues down the road. Should I go ahead and do it?

Spackling paste is really for tiny touch-ups and won't hold up well if applied thickly. You could try filling the gap with cement to really get it flush, or use furring strips to create a box around the pipe if you want something sturdy.

Honestly, I wouldn't just spackle over it. You might want to use L-shaped trim instead. It's a quicker solution that'll also keep the pipe accessible and look way better than a spackle job. Trust me, spackle on its own can crack and end up looking messy after a while!

Exactly! The trim makes it easier to manage and maintain in the long run.

If that pipe is a gas line, you should definitely avoid putting anything over it. That could lead to some serious safety risks!

How can I tell if it's a gas line? Both ends of the pipe go into a wall, so I'm not sure.
