Is it possible to find a good bench plane for around $100?

I'm looking to flatten a workbench top that measures 72"x29" and is made from 2x4s. I'm wondering if there's a bench plane suitable for this task that I can purchase for approximately $100. Any recommendations?

Check out flea markets for bench planes in your price range. Just keep in mind that you'll need sharpening tools and know how to set it up. If you have a cabinet shop nearby, they might have a Timesaver Abrasive planer that can surface your bench cheaper than buying a plane.

A decent vintage plane is probably your best bet for quality on a budget. You can find them quite cheap in used tool groups. If the handle is damaged, no big deal—replacing it is a common DIY project. For new options, consider the TayTools or Jorgensen #4; they're affordable but will need tuning. Just be aware that a heavier plane can be tiring to use for a long time.

That's a great tip! I had no idea about the heavier planes being more exhausting. Good to know!

You can definitely find a used number 7 or 8 plane that's a bit rusty—these often sell for under $100. With a little restoration, they'll work like a charm. I even have one that I've been meaning to fix up if you're interested!
