Is it possible to paint basement floor tiles with regular paint?

I'm dealing with some pretty unattractive tiles in my basement and I'm eager to give them a fresh look. I'm curious if I can use paints other than specialized tile paint. The tile paint kits are pricey at around $70 for a kit that covers about 100 square feet, but I need to cover about 500 square feet in total. I don't want to spend $350 on five of those kits.

Also, my basement has a couple of drains and is prone to flooding, so I'm hesitant to go with options like LVP or carpet. It's really low traffic since I only use it for laundry occasionally (the laundry room floor is another project).

So, is there a chance I could use something like garage floor paint, outdoor paint, or even regular paint with a sealing top coat?

Have you thought about contacting paint dealers that supply to bathroom reglazing companies? It might be worthwhile to get some quotes from a reglazing company or see what options epoxy flooring people might offer over the existing tiles.

Sure, you can technically paint your tiles with whatever you want, but if you go that route, don't expect a great outcome. It might look decent initially but often ends up peeling. But hey, it's your call!

True, but it already looks pretty bad anyway, right? I'm just aiming for it to look 'fine enough' rather than a disaster.

You could check for the same paint used in those kits, but in larger quantities. Sometimes you can find those at a cheaper price with a bit of research.

Honestly, if you're okay with a bit of peeling paint, go for it! But if it were me, I’d consider removing the tiles for a long-lasting solution. Just my two cents!

I totally get that, but the tiles are asbestos, and I can't afford to get them removed right now.

There's also this rubbery, non-slip coating available that you might consider. It's a bit different but can add some texture and protection!
