I'm about to close on a condo and I'm curious if removing the fireplace is actually an option. I understand I need to check with the HOA, but I'm really wondering how often this is allowed. Is it practical or reasonable to do this in a condo? I'm worried it might end up costing a lot. The fireplace restricts my living room layout, and honestly, I don't think I'll ever use it.

Honestly, I think it would be more practical to wall off the fireplace instead of trying to remove it completely. Removing it can be a huge hassle and messy. Plus, if you ever decide to sell, having the option to convert it back could be beneficial. Just be sure not to touch the roof unless you get the HOA's green light!
It really depends on the type of fireplace and the specific rules of your HOA. If the removal doesn’t change the exterior of the condo, it’s more likely they’ll let you do it. You’ve got a good chance! Just make sure to check with the HOA first.
You’re gonna want to know if it has a brick chimney that goes out through the roof or if it’s ventless gas. The HOA usually isn’t responsible for what happens inside your unit, so you might have some freedom to change it, as long as you don't mess with anything outside.
