Is it Realistic for a Woodcarver to Also Be a Logger?

Hey everyone! I'm working on a story with a character who is really into woodcarving and lives in the woods. He has a little shop where he sells wooden items like dolls and furniture that he makes himself. He's from a long line of carvers and even cuts down his own trees for wood. I'm curious about how realistic it is for him to also be a logger. I've read that woodcarving and logging require different skills, and many carvers usually buy their wood. Do you think a carver would benefit from being a logger too? Is it likely for someone to have both skills? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Well, it really depends on the time period and setting you're considering. Historically, full-time carvers were mostly in cities and traveled for jobs, while those living off the land usually combined farming with some woodwork in the winter for some extra cash. Also, logging is often a team effort, so your character being both a logger and a woodcarver might be a bit of a stretch unless you establish a unique scenario. However, it’s not unusual for carvers to select their own trees, especially for smaller projects like spoons, where you want to use branches that fit the shape you’re aiming for. But for larger items like furniture, it's better to use dry, square-sawn lumber from a sawmill.”},{
