Is It Really Possible to Get 3 Bids from Contractors?

I've been trying to get three contractors to submit comparable bids for my project, but it feels like an impossible task. Based on my experience in Mount Desert, Maine, and Key West, Florida, it seems like it takes at least six months just to get three contractors to show up and provide written proposals with similar scopes of work. I'm really curious about others' experiences with this. Can anyone share if getting three bids is achievable in other areas?

I don't think it should take six months, but I get your concern about reliability. For accurate bids, contractors will need to check in with their subs and dive into specifications. Sometimes, a lower initial price can lead to surprise costs later on, so it's important to ensure everyone's clear on the details before they start. We opted for a contractor we trusted and were pleased with that decision – it simplified the process and kept us within budget.

As a contractor myself, I can say that while it's a good idea to get multiple bids, it rarely works out that way. Sometimes I struggle just to get three subcontractors to bid on a project. A lot of homeowners can be tough to deal with, which can make contractors hesitant to invest time in estimates.

It really depends on what you're asking for. A broad request like 'full bathroom remodel' won't yield comparable bids as well as a detailed breakdown of tasks like 'install a new tile floor' or 'replace the bathtub with a shower'. The more specific you can be, the better the bids you'll receive from contractors. Also, consider breaking down larger projects into manageable parts to help out with the bidding process.

I totally feel your frustration! I often get contractors to come check out my project and then… nothing. I think a lot of them focus on bigger jobs and, unfortunately, my projects are generally smaller. It's a little infuriating. I'm considering DIY for now and reaching out to subs directly instead of going through a general contractor to simplify things.

You picked two pricey locations, which can definitely complicate things. It might be harder to find available contractors when there are so many high-end projects competing for their attention. Getting three bids in such competitive areas might not be realistic, but it’s not impossible if you broaden your search.

Absolutely, you can get three bids, but you need a clear and detailed scope of work for them to compare. Without specifics, it’s hard for contractors to provide bids that match up. Having materials selected and showing genuine interest in your project will definitely make them more willing to submit their bids.
