Is It Safe to Have a Dump Truck Deliver Gravel on My Concrete Driveway?

I'm planning to get several yards of crushed gravel delivered for a DIY patio in my backyard, and I was thinking about having it dumped on my concrete driveway. The driveway was poured in 2018 and has a broom finish, with no visible cracks outside of the control joints. I'm wondering if there are any concerns about this, especially regarding the weight of the dump truck and any potential damage to the driveway.

I had gravel dumped on my newer driveway and it held up fine, especially since they used a mini dump truck. I recommend laying down a tarp first to avoid any direct contact with the concrete, which could prevent scratches or other potential damage.

Honestly, I wouldn’t risk it. When I had gravel delivered, the company refused to dump it on my driveway because of the risk of damage. A better idea is to have it dumped on the side of the road if that’s possible—it's closer to your yard and saves your driveway from any potential harm.

The safety of dumping gravel on your driveway really depends on how well it was constructed. If your driveway is thick and well-built, you might be fine. But if it's not as sturdy, it could suffer some damage. To be on the safe side, consider renting some ground protection mats for the truck to drive over. Scratches could occur from the gravel too, so putting down plywood could help protect the surface.
