Hey everyone! I live in Colorado and I'm thinking about putting in a cat door that goes from my living room straight into the garage. The reason for this is that the cat door will lead to an enclosed catio where the litter boxes are kept. We don't park our cars in the garage, but I'm wondering if this would break any fire safety laws? Any insights would be appreciated!

Yeah, it's a no-go on adding a cat door to that wall or door. The garage acts as a fire block, and cutting into it might not be the best idea since it’s meant to keep flames contained. If you really want to go ahead with it, try to find a different door that you can modify instead of messing with a fire-rated one.
I hope it’s not a problem because I actually did the same thing! My kitties love it, except for one who pretends he can't figure out the cat door. I’ve just kept it taped open for now.

It's probably against the fire codes, but that depends on your area. Typically, there needs to be a fire barrier between your home and garage for safety. If you’re not using a fire-rated cat door, cutting a hole in that barrier might violate the code. If you're planning on staying put, you might want to consider putting the cat door in the wall instead of the garage door so it doesn't become a bigger headache if you decide to sell later!
