Is it safe to remove fake brick from around my fireplace?

I'm considering removing a fake brick wall that surrounds my corner gas/wood fireplace in the living room because I don't really like how it looks. My main concern is whether I can do this safely, especially since the fireplace generates heat. Will the walls end up getting damaged or discolored from the heat?

In my experience, it’s usually not safe to remove those fake bricks. They’re there to protect the wall behind the fireplace from heat damage. If it’s just decorative and your fireplace is freestanding like you mentioned, replacing it with a different material could work, but you'd still need something that can handle the heat. Maybe post a picture to get more specific feedback?

Here’s a link to the photo I wanted to show: https://imgur.com/a/GyK3oTw. It’s a freestanding fireplace, so I’m hoping it’s okay to change out the brick.

Be sure to maintain proper clearance to combustibles if you do decide to change it. Most codes say you need at least a 6-inch gap between the firebox and any combustible materials, which includes the surround. If you’re thinking about alternatives, non-combustible materials like tile or natural stone are good options!

It’s important to check the building codes regarding combustible materials near heating appliances. Generally, you can't just have drywall there; it needs to be something that can withstand the heat. I’d recommend looking up the specific regulations for your type of fireplace—most manufacturers provide guidelines for safe installations. You might want to consult with a general contractor for personalized advice too!

Thanks for the tips! Do you know where I can find the building codes for fireplaces?

You can usually find them online or through your local building department. It's also good to check the manufacturer's instructions.
