Is it safe to return home after drilling holes in a 1950s house?

We're planning to re-route some pipes in our house that was built around 1953. The work involves drilling a few holes through walls to access the kitchen and two bathrooms. We'll be out for two days while they work on drilling and plumbing. After that, they'll need another couple of days for patching and tiling, but I'll have water access during that time. Is it safe to come back on the third day, or should I be concerned about dust and particles from the drilling?

It's probably not a big deal. Just double-check the area after they finish for any lingering dust. If you have any concerns about safety, consider asking the contractors if they can provide their safety measures, especially regarding anything like asbestos.

Generally, you should be fine after a couple of days. Just make sure to ventilate the area well once you’re back. However, keep in mind that if your house has any old materials, like asbestos in wet areas, it might be a good idea to check with a professional before returning.

I think you'll be alright! They will likely create some dust, but a few days should be enough time for most of it to settle. If you’re worried, wear a mask when you get back in and air out the space well.
