Hey everyone! I just moved into a new apartment and there's a fire alarm on the wall that's perfectly positioned for this tapestry I want to hang. I've seen some posts about this issue but I'm feeling a bit paranoid. My question is, can I just unplug the alarm without it tripping? Do I need to remove the batteries too? Just to note, there's another functioning detector less than ten feet away, so I'm not completely leaving the area unprotected. Thanks for any advice!

If you’re considering unplugging it, just be aware that it’s important to have multiple detectors in different areas. If there’s one close by that’s working, that’s good, but don’t just shove the unplugged alarm away! You never know when it might be needed, especially for inspections when moving out.
Honestly, you should just leave the alarm as is. If you tamper with it, you might be breaking something in your lease, and that could lead to eviction. Better safe than sorry!
Be cautious! In apartment complexes, fire alarms can be interconnected due to code. Unplugging it might trigger a tamper alarm, which you might not even notice at first. Plus, removing the battery is pointless since it's just a backup. It's best to talk to building maintenance and see if you can get permission to disconnect it safely.

Yeah, it's usually in the lease that you can't mess with fire alarms. Just hang the tapestry somewhere else!
