I just moved into a new apartment and got some #10x2-1/2" RSS screws because they claim to work like lag bolts. In my previous apartment, I used plastic studs for hanging pictures, and it worked great, but I want to avoid making large holes this time. If I use three screws placed about 2 inches apart in a straight line, will that be enough support for a 30lb poster? Also, do I need to make sure they go into the wall studs or can they just be in the drywall?

Hitting a stud is crucial since 30lbs isn't something drywall can support on its own. You mentioned the stud finder, but if the stud is off-center, consider adjusting the picture a bit. You could use a plastic anchor or another screw for support if needed.
You should definitely hit a stud to make it safe. One screw is usually enough if it's anchored into a stud. If you’re going to use three, just remember that only one of them might be hitting a stud, unless you adjust where you place them. Make sure to keep that in mind for hanging your picture straight!
Thanks for the tip!
If you're working with drywall, I recommend using drywall anchors rated for the weight you're hanging. 30lbs is a bit much for just drywall without any stud support. I've hung heavier mirrors using rated drywall anchors, so they can work really well if installed correctly! Just ensure you place them where you'll get the best support for that 30lb load.
That's a good idea! I'll see what I can do to keep it level.
