I'm trying to tackle the moss in my lawn and was planning to use granular iron sulfate with my push-along rotary spreader. However, I found a note from Westland, a well-known lawn care brand, saying they don't recommend using rotary spreaders for their lawnsand product, which is essentially just iron sulfate. That got me worried—does their warning mean it's not safe in general to use a rotary spreader for granular iron sulfate? I'm new to lawncare, really just started beyond mowing, and I've already bought some generic granular iron sulfate. Should I be concerned, or am I overthinking this? I've thought about switching to a drop spreader, but I've heard they aren't great for lawn products either!

I get why you want to eliminate the moss, but have you considered just using a rake instead? Seems like a huge hassle to spray chemicals when manual removal could do the trick. I dealt with a bunch of moss too, and just raked it out with an old garden rake. Good luck with it!
Yeah, granular iron sulfate can be nasty to breathe in, and I've heard it can stain things like hair if it gets wet. I’d recommend going with a drop spreader instead. You could also try mixing it with sand for a safer application—1 part iron sulfate to 4 parts sand works well. Just be cautious with it!
Thanks for the tip!
Check the data sheet for the product. It says that ferrous sulfate can be hazardous, especially with skin contact. Using a rotary spreader could increase exposure risks due to how it spreads the chemicals around. I’d be cautious if I were you!
I’ve seen mixed advice online from professionals who recommend iron sulfate for moss but never mention it being harmful. Some even spray it diluted without masks. Now, I’m really unsure about what to do.

Thanks for the input! The moss is really thick and is choking out my grass, so raking it out isn’t really an option for my large lawn.
