Is It Safe to Use My Table Saw Without a Riving Knife?

I just picked up a Dewalt DWE7485 from Facebook Marketplace, and everything is working well except it didn't come with a riving knife. I ordered one on eBay, making sure it was the correct thickness to match the blade, but when I installed it, it didn't quite align right. Adjusting it has been a nightmare since I can barely see the screw I need to turn with an Allen key, and it's in a cramped spot. Although I did manage to improve the alignment a bit, it's still causing the wood to pinch against the fence. This whole process has been so frustrating that I'm seriously considering using the saw without the riving knife. How risky is that?

Honestly, it’s a pretty risky move to run the saw without a riving knife. Without it, there’s a good chance the wood could get pinched and kick back towards you, which can be dangerous. Just think about the last time you saw someone shooting a board through the wall—definitely not fun!

That does sound quite exciting to be fair.

The adjustment for the Dewalt riving knife can be really frustrating. I always find myself wondering if I've got it right until everything's put together. The struggle is real, and it’s tough to get it close enough without having to try multiple times.

Think of it like driving a car without a seatbelt; it may work for you, but it’s not the safest option. Plenty of people do it, but just remember the risks involved—especially if you've had some close calls in your woodworking past, like I have.

It can be dangerous to operate a table saw without a riving knife, especially during rip cuts. The board can lift and pinch against the blade, causing it to kick back. Alignment is a pain, I know, but it’s really important for safety. Are you using a thin kerf blade? Those can complicate the situation with the riving knife.

I've run my table saw for ages without a riving knife. I guess it depends on what you’re used to.
