Is It Smart to File an Insurance Claim for Roof Replacement After Storm Damage?

I recently had a roofer suggest that I replace my roof using my home insurance due to storm damage, but I'm feeling a bit unsure. The house was bought with the understanding that the roof has about 10-15 years left, but I noticed some shingles are loose, making me wonder if it's time for a replacement. The roofer mentioned that I would only need to pay my deductible if I claim insurance for storm damage. However, I am concerned about how this would affect my home insurance premium and whether this approach is common or just a sales tactic. Has anyone here had experience with this?

Honestly, I wouldn’t rush into filing that claim. If the storm didn’t directly cause the loose shingles, chances are that your claim will get denied, especially since your roof is nearing the end of its life. Sometimes roofers exaggerate damage estimates to get business. Be careful, as an unnecessary claim could raise your rates, or worse, make it harder to get insurance in the future. You might want to consult with a couple of independent roofers to get their take on the condition of your roof before making any decisions.

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about too. I might just talk to another roofer first to see if I can repair the loose shingles instead of going through with a full replacement.

I had my roof replaced by insurance after a severe storm caused significant damage. I got several quotes from different roofers, and it was worth it. But keep in mind that insurance companies have changed their policies since then, often adjusting payouts based on the age of your roof. If the roofer you’re talking to is claiming they’re just in the area for roof replacements, it might be smart to get a second opinion from another roofing expert. You want to make sure you’re not being sold on something you don’t really need.

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like getting quotes is a smart move. I'll definitely consider that.
