Is It Too Early to Plant Cucumber Seedlings in Southern California?

I've started some cucumber seedlings indoors, and I'm really eager to get them into the garden. However, I'm noticing that nighttime temperatures are still hitting the mid-40s here in Southern California. Should I hold off on planting them for a few more weeks, or is it safe to move them outside now?

You're not alone! I’m also planting mine at this time in SoCal. The temperatures can vary quite a bit, but it seems manageable. Plus, having my seedlings has me super excited, even if my partner teases me about my gardening obsession!

Haha, I feel you! My spouse thinks I’m a total nerd for getting excited about plants.

It's a little early, to be honest. The general rule is to wait until night temps are around 50°F before planting them outside. I’m in zone 10b and won’t put mine outside until likely April. Just keep a close check on the temperatures, as anything in the 40s can potentially stunt their growth.

Very true! I'm in the same zone 10b, but my lows are about 50°F now, so it's really about watching local weather. Also, checking the soil temperature is a good idea.

I think you'll be fine to plant them out soon! Another week max and I’m putting my transplants in too. Just make sure to keep an eye on the weather!
