Is It Too Late to Start Growing My Own Plants?

I've been wanting to get into gardening after my grandpa passed away a month ago. He loved it, and I wish I had learned more from him. I'm eager to grow things like cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and possibly some flowers. It seems like a nice summer project, plus groceries are getting pricey, so I thought I'd give it a shot. However, I've heard mixed advice. Some people say I missed the window for germinating seeds, especially since someone at a local gardening shop laughed and told me I should've started back in February (which seems wild since it's still winter then!). My mom thinks I won't get to see the fruits of my labor until summer is over, suggesting I buy plants instead. Everyone I talk to mentions they don't start from seeds. What's the deal? Am I too late to begin germinating?

There’s definitely pros and cons to both starting from seed and buying plants. I prefer seeds because I enjoy learning about the seedlings, but buying an established plant means you skip ahead to the fun part. Either way, you’ll enjoy gardening!

It really depends on your climate! Seed packets usually tell you how many weeks until you can harvest. If you have enough warm weather left in your growing season, you should be okay for some plants. For example, beans, zucchini, and tomatoes are still viable, but cucumbers are kind of pushing it! What’s your growing space like?

Starting from seeds can be a cool adventure, but since it's getting late in the season, why not treat yourself and buy some established plants? This way, you'll definitely get your veggies without the long wait.
