Is It Too Late to Start Growing Onions in Zone 7a?

I recently got into vegetable gardening, but we were thinking about moving, so I held off on starting my first garden. Now, there's a chance we might stay put for a couple of years, and I'm eager to plant some carrots and onions in my current yard. However, I've read that in my zone (7a), the best time to plant onions is early to mid-March, and with today being the 27th and a frost-sensitive cutoff around July 30, I'm worried I might have missed my chance. Are there any quick tricks to grow onions that don't require heavy-duty hotbeds, or should I choose something else that's better suited for this late start?

You could try starting onions in bags or containers this year! By moving them inside at night, you might gain a few extra weeks to get them going.

Consider planting scallions instead of bulbing onions since they're a bit more forgiving with timing. Bulbing onions really need early planting in spring, and if you plant them now, they might just go to seed. You could also look into bunching onions, which are fast and easy to grow, or wait until early fall to start them when it's cooler. Plus, don’t forget about garlic and leeks—they’re great for fall planting too! Now is a good time to prep your garden beds or grow bags for the upcoming season.

Great idea! I've also heard radishes are super easy to grow if you're looking for something quick. Thanks for the suggestions!
