Is It Worth Insulating My Garage for a Workshop/Gym?

Hey everyone! I'm currently working on finishing my attached garage, where I plan to set up a workshop and gym. The wall between the house and the garage is already insulated, but the rest of the garage isn't. I live in the Bay Area, so the weather is mostly moderate, with a few weeks of really hot temps (90+ degrees). I've heard mixed things about whether insulation will actually help with those hot summer days. I'm thinking about adding a portable A/C unit for extra relief too. Do you think spending over $1,000 on insulation would make a significant difference, especially since most discussions seem to focus on regions with extreme weather? I'd love to hear from folks with local experiences. Thanks!

For what it’s worth, I've insulated my garage and it’s been a game changer, even just for sound dampening help! It keeps the temperature a bit more stable, and that $1k investment paid off pretty quickly. Just consider also the insulation of your garage doors and if there's insulation in the attic above—those factors can really help overall performance!

That’s a good point! If the garage doors are uninsulated, it kind of defeats the purpose, right? You wanna keep all that work relevant.

Honestly, if you're planning to turn that space into something more than a car parking lot, insulation is totally worth it. These days, mini-splits are great for cooling and can work wonders; I’d recommend considering both. You’ll keep it cooler in summer and warmer in winter, making it much nicer to work out there!

Agreed! A mini-split seems like the way to go too. It can adapt to whatever you need, pit it in with the insulation, and you're golden.

Absolutely, insulating your garage can really enhance the comfort and usability of the space, especially if you're planning to use it as a gym and workshop. It'll help regulate temperatures throughout the year, not just in the summer. If you're getting that extreme heat, insulation can keep it from feeling like an oven in there! Plus, if you seal things up well, it may even help with any road noise coming in. You might find it’s well worth the investment!

Yeah, definitely. Even if it’s hot outside, a well-insulated garage will be much more bearable. And if you add some A/C, it’ll be totally manageable!
