Is It Worth It to Move My AC Unit to Free Up Closet Space?

Hey everyone! I have a house from 2002 with an all-electric AC unit currently located in a closet in my living room. I'm considering relocating it to either the attic, garage, or potentially suspending it in the garage. The reason is simple: I want to remove that closet and create more usable space in my living room. It's taking up a significant area, and I'm estimating that this could give me about 50 extra square feet. I live in Texas, my home is a single-story 1260 sq ft, and it's just me and my 4-year-old son. I'd really love to hear your thoughts on whether this move is feasible, what the costs might look like, and if it's truly worth it! Thanks in advance for any help!

Just wanted to add that if it’s your furnace in that closet, moving it can be complex. You’ll likely need a different unit for the attic (as upright models can’t be laid on their side), plus costs for new ductwork, returning air vents, and more. All that might come up to around $5k for the whole operation. So really consider if losing that closet space is worth it for you.

Yeah, when you break it down like that, it doesn't seem worth it for just a little extra space. I might look at other ways to use the area instead! Thanks for the info!

Right? Plus, there’s drywall work to think about after! I’d take that cash and put it towards something more fun or useful.

It's definitely feasible! I'd recommend getting a few quotes from local HVAC companies to see what the costs would be. Each company will likely provide a different perspective and price range.

Moving the AC unit could be possible, but keep in mind that you're looking at a hefty job. The ductwork and wiring would likely need to be rerouted, and that can get pretty pricey. Also, considering the Texas heat, having an air handler in an attic or garage isn’t uncommon but can lead to problems like condensation leaks. So, while it's doable, it may not be the best solution.

Definitely seems like a common setup here; tons of folks have their units in the attic or garage. I get that wanting more living room space is appealing, but not sure if it’s worth the hassle or money!
