Hey everyone! I've got some pretty scuffed-up stair treads that I'm looking to redo. The treads are structurally fine, but they could definitely use a refresh. I'm considering removing the old treads and running them through my planer to get to the bare wood, but I'm worried about whether that's a good idea or if I should use a stripper instead. Also, will using my planer to scrape off the poly ruin the blades?

If you strip them in place, make sure to keep everything clean. My partner redid our basement stairs, and it got super dirty fast! We used Kraft paper and blue tape, but honestly, next time I’d probably suggest making plywood caps for each tread to keep it tidy.
If you can easily take them off, just remember it’s not the best for your planer. I suggest keeping a set of knives just for that old wood—way easier to swap out! Afterward, be sure to clean the rollers with mineral spirits. Oh, and starting with 60 grit sandpaper will help get rid of any dirt that’s been embedded.
