Is It Worth Paying Extra for a Single-Slab Dining Table?

I'm looking to order a custom walnut dining table and I received two quotes from the vendor following my specifications (70in x 35in x 2in): one for $2,700 using 2 panels from the same tree, and another for $3,800 for a single block. I'm wondering if the $1,100 difference is justified and if it adds value. I'd love to get some feedback from the community on this! Thanks a bunch!

The choice between a single slab and two panels really depends on their appearance. For instance, if the single slab has a stunning grain pattern, that might make it worth the extra cost. In terms of functionality, both options should perform similarly if the builder knows what they're doing. So, I'd say consider the visual appeal alongside the price!

Thanks for the input! Assuming the end result looks similar and only the slab's visual is different, would you say $2,700 vs. $3,800 is reasonable? I'm thinking the $1,100 premium could be for that more scarce find.

It's all about the rarity of the wood. One solid slab comes from older, larger trees which are less common, and flattening those can be trickier too. While both sizes can be functional, the single slab's scarcity might justify the higher price, though I would have expected the price difference to be larger given the challenges with larger slabs.

Good point about the age of the trees! I appreciate the insight.
