Is March Too Late to Start Onion Seeds in Zone 7a?

Hey everyone! I'm gardening on my rooftop in containers and I'm really eager to grow onions this year. I live in zone 7a and I'm wondering if it's too late to start sowing onion seeds in March? Since I can't over-winter anything due to my townhome situation, I'd love to hear if anyone has successfully started onion seeds this time of year. I've considered onion sets and plants, but I prefer starting from seeds. Thanks for your help!

It's probably okay to start now! I usually go for the little onion shoots since they’re cheap and you can get about 50 for around $4. They typically come in nicely by July. Just keep in mind that starting from seeds might yield smaller bulbs.

That’s true, but those little shoots are often already in the shallot stage when you buy them. If you decide to grow from seeds, look for short-day varieties, but the bulbs may not be as big. Just keep an eye on growth stages and what different types of onions need!
