Is Mixing Grass Clippings with Kitchen Waste Good for Composting?

I recently set up a small compost pit in my garden where I'm putting my kitchen waste, primarily fruit and vegetable scraps. I've also collected a couple of buckets of grass clippings, and I was thinking about adding them to the compost instead of throwing them away. However, I heard that mixing in grass might ruin my compost. Is that true? Should I keep the grass separate, or is it fine to include it in the same pit with the kitchen waste?

Also, consider adding some cardboard or paper to balance the moisture levels and improve aeration in your compost. It’ll help keep everything from getting too soggy!

You can definitely mix grass clippings with your kitchen waste, but keep an eye on the balance. The key is not to let it get too wet or too dry. Just don't dump all your grass in at once, or you might throw off the ratio!

That’s solid advice, but remember, too many grass clippings can overwhelm your compost heap. If you add all your clippings at once, it can get out of whack pretty fast.

Got it! So if my pit is filled with about 60% kitchen scraps, would adding 35% grass and 5% leaves be a good mix?
