I'm trying to replace my exterior front door, but I'm realizing it might be a bit trickier than I thought! My current door measures 83" x approximately 33.75" (maybe closer to 33.6"), and when I check places like Home Depot or Lowe's, I see standard sizes like 32" x 80" and 36" x 80". I know I can buy a 'slab' and cut it down, but I'm not sure I'm up for the carpentry skills required for that. My main goal is to get a solid door that closes and seals well, which I currently don't have. A pre-hung door seems like the safest option, but I'd love to hear any advice or insights from anyone who's been through this process! Also, just to clarify, when I say 'slab,' I mean just the door, not the frame. Thanks in advance!

Have you checked if there's a lumber yard in your area? They usually know a lot more than big box stores when it comes to custom sizes. There's a place near me that can take your old door and transfer all the hardware to a new one, perfectly sized for your opening!
You'll want to look for a 34" x 84" slab for your door, but remember, you'll need to fit it properly into the opening. Mortising for the hinges and drilling for the lockset can get tricky, and it’s not as simple as it sounds—definitely not carpentry 101! Just keep that in mind if you go this route.

That sounds amazing! I’ll definitely check into that tomorrow! Didn’t know such a thing existed!
