Hey everyone! I'm looking to mount a ceiling fan, but currently, I've just got a plate where it should go. I read that it should be marked indicating it can support a fan, but that mark seems to be painted over. Can I safely install a fan here, or do I need to check for something special? Here's a picture for reference: https://imgur.com/a/kFLpfMy.

From what I can see, that pancake box probably has a joist right behind it. If the ears on the box aren't threaded, check the holes above them—there should be wood from the ceiling joist if it's installed correctly. If that’s the case, you can definitely mount the fan! Use long construction screws to attach the fan bracket to the box, making sure to tighten it until everything is flush. Just keep in mind that the box itself doesn't support weight; it’s there for the wires.
Yeah, that's a pancake box, so there's likely a joist just above it. I wouldn't worry about mounting the fan as long as you ensure it’s balanced and running fine. The real issue is when people try to mount fans on just drywall. If you're feeling uncertain, you could always swap that pancake box for a sturdier, fan-rated one. Since there's a joist nearby, you don't have to go for the heavy-duty rework types!
You're all set! Go ahead and install it! ?
Actually, a fan box needs to be thicker and specifically designed to attach securely to the joists. They come with added support and are much better for holding weight. You could check out some old work boxes that let you install without needing attic access. That's a safer route if you're unsure!

The screws on the plate were about 2 inches long and seemed secure in the joists!
